A Thousand Layered Scenes
By Eugene Raphael · Dream Report · Liminal Light Lab
Technique: soft gazing around the imagery instead of at it. Outcome: a purple blob that descended into me, followed by hundreds of thousands of dream scenes stacked in layers.
Late August 2024 was when soft gazing really clicked for me. Rather than staring at an image, I let my gaze rest softly around its edges. Over a few days it went from interesting to overwhelming. From my journal.
The purple blob
Nap, soft gazing. 1000 dream scenes. Soft gazing around the purple blob. Had a feeling the purple blob "liked" this; it descended on me, entering my body. That's when hundreds of thousands of dream scenes appeared stacked upon each other in layers. Each one was different and intricately detailed. August 24, 2024
The snow forest
Used soft gazing technique after seeing vague shapes that had 3-dimensional sensations to them. Like a feeling in my forehead that showed me images were forming. Saw a lush snow-capped forest. Soft gazed around the edges of the trees, looking at about 6 different trees and then went back to the first one. Felt a boost of energy at the 6th tree. August 26, 2024
Fixing the scenery
Fixating imagery … Inorganic being swimming around, a fish-like monkey. Tried to "see it". Dream scenery fixating by soft gazing. This technique works. August 27, 2024
Takeaway
Soft gazing seems to feed the imagery rather than chase it off. When I looked around the purple blob instead of at it, it responded, and what came next was more than I could take in: layer after layer of complete, detailed scenes. Two days later the same approach on a snowy forest held the scene steady, tree by tree. If direct staring makes your imagery collapse, try resting your attention on the edges.
