The House in the Pine Trees

Technique: sitting-up nap, following a changing face in the imagery. Outcome: carried out of a city into desert chaparral, then high above a pine forest I somehow knew, with a hidden house in the distance.

Some of my best entries don't come from forcing anything. I just follow whatever the imagery offers and let it lead. This one came during a nap in July 2024, from my journal.

Following the face

Nap. Sitting up. Following a face that kept changing, drawing me in deeper and down a road. … Led me out of the city to a desert chaparral. The scene was jumping frames.

Above the treetops

Next I was staring at the tops of some pine trees. There were thousands of them. I was up high in the branches. I knew this place.

The hidden house

In the distance a house appeared, hidden in the trees. I had the impression this was a real place, or a dream recreation of a real place. I knew this forest very well. The house was squat … rectangular windows. It had a very modern look.

Takeaway

The face was the doorway. I didn't try to hold it still; I let it keep changing and followed it, and it pulled me deeper with each change. Notice the "jumping frames," too: the scene skipped from city to desert to treetops without a smooth transition, and I just went with it. The strangest part was the familiarity. I knew that forest, and I still don't know where it is.
