The Lion on the Stairs

Outcome: a lucid dream that began when I noticed one eye was dreaming and the other wasn't, followed by a lion on a stairway.

This is one of the odder ways I've become lucid. From my journal, February 2024.

One eye dreaming

LUCID: One eye open and one eye closed, realized one eye was dreaming. Realized I was dreaming, went down a hall.

The lion

Instead of looking at my hands went down a stairway looking for an inorganic being. A lion came down the stairs after me; I pointed my pinky finger at it and said loudly "are you an inorganic being?" The lion came toward me then disappeared.

Explaining it inside the dream

A person appeared and I explained how I became aware: covering my right eye, it was dreaming but my left wasn't. Lost awareness at that point.

Later that night:

Emanations moving in a crazy mesh-like pattern.

Takeaway

Two lessons here. First, the split between the eyes was the trigger: one side of my vision was dreaming, and noticing the mismatch woke me up inside the dream. Second, explaining is where I lost it. As soon as I started telling a dream character how I got lucid, my attention shifted from experiencing to narrating, and the awareness slipped away. I'd skipped looking at my hands to go hunting instead, and in hindsight a moment of stabilizing first might have bought more time.
